On-air promos:

November 2020 pre- and post-election campaign

I loved writing on-air promos - they’re like creating a puzzle of words. You have to strike the balance of saying exactly what you mean in a way that is ear-catching, memorable, and fits perfectly into the allotted time slot, which can come down to a fraction of a second!

KCUR Year in Review

Fall 2020 Volunteer of the Year write-up

This type of writing is my bread and butter (the best kind of pickle). The journalistic style is writing that makes me feel at home in my work.

This piece was published in KCUR’s 2020 annual year-in-review piece, which is printed and mailed to all members, volunteers, and other important constituents and community members.

Each year, KCUR honors two Volunteers of the Year. These people exemplify a spirit of generosity with their time and talent, and go above and beyond in their service of the station. On Sunday, March 8, we held our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party and honored Holly Tanquary and Largo Callenbach as our 2020 Volunteers of the Year.

Holly has volunteered with KCUR for many years, and has recruited many of her friends and family to join her in the phone room during membership drives and at events, like our annual Fish Fry holiday concert. She is a leader and always a positive presence whenever she volunteers with KCUR.

Largo has served on the committee to plan KCUR’s annual gala RadioActive since it began 5 years ago. She is an ambassador for KCUR to her community, and is willing to take on any task, big or small that will support KCUR’s events and endeavors.

The Volunteer Appreciation Party was the last time KCUR’s volunteer community was able to gather – just a week later, our staff began working from home. Our membership drive went remote and our events went virtual. Though we were not able to share early mornings or late evenings together in the phone room or at RadioActive, our volunteers did not stop supporting KCUR. They share our stories through social media, assembling mailings in their own homes, and sewing masks for our essential staff who are still in the office. Even now, KCUR relies on our volunteers in order to continue to provide Kansas City with reliable and accessible news and information. We are so grateful for their never-ending support.
