Can I Give You a Reading?

Are you thinking of booking a tarot reading, or hiring a reader for your event, but not quite sure what to expect? Are you curious about what a tarot reading might look like? Every reader has their own unique approach and preferences when it comes to their practice, and every querent (person being read for) brings their own assumptions and questions to the table. This meanings no two readings are going to be the exact same, and some may be drastically different. My philosophy is that tarot ought to be accessible and feel approachable for everyone. Your first reading can be daunting, so I’ve outlined what it might look like with me as your reader.

I want someone sitting down for a reading with me to feel comfortable. I like to set up my reading space in a semi-private, low-traffic area at an event. It might be a separate room from the main event, or even just a table in a corner away from anything too noisy. I love having some flowers and a candle or two on my table, and comfortable seats for everyone who sits down. I like to sit across the table from the querent. It’s most common for people to come to my table solo - it can be awkward to have a friend or a partner with you, but it can also be reassuring. It’s ultimately up to the querent if they want to come to the table alone or with someone else.

Before we get into the cards, I want to get to know you, at least a little bit, I’ll ask you a few questions, and I like to know how much you know about tarot, or if this is your first experience. This helps me know how much background to give you as I go through the reading; someone with a robust personal tarot practice already is going to need a little less explanation than someone who has never seen a deck before. I want everyone, no matter their experience, to feel like they are able to come to my table.

Next, I’ll ask you if there is a specific situation you want the reading to focus on. You don’t need to have a question or situation in mind, but if you do, it’s always best to keep questions open-ended. My tarot readings are not meant to predict your future, and the cards aren’t great at answering yes/no questions. Instead of “will I get the job I just applied for?” a querent might say “I want to focus on my current job search for this reading.” You are having a conversation with the cards, and I’m helping to facilitate it!

Once I know a little about you and what you hope to learn about in the reading, we’ll decide what kind of spread to pull. When I read tarot at events, I mostly do three-card pulls. The three cards in a reading can have many different meanings, some of which are:

Card 1 | Card 2 | Card 3

Past | Present | Future

Mind | Body | Spirit

Self | Relationship | Partner

Situation | Action | Outcome

Opportunity | Challenge | Outcome

I will give you a couple different options for your spread - if you don’t have a question in mind and just want a general reading, I will usually offer either a past/present/future spread or mind/body/spirit spread. These can often be eye-opening on their own, and lead to more questions and conversations to have with the cards.

Once we decide on a spread, I will shuffle the cards a bit, keeping your situation or energy in mind. I might also ask you to shuffle the cards or cut the deck. Some readers prefer not to have anyone else touch their cards. I like having the person who is asking the question imbue some of their own energy into the deck before pulling their cards.

After the deck is shuffled and cut, I will pull your cards from the top of the deck and lay them out facing you for the reading. We both take a moment to look at your spread, taking in the words and images on the cards.

Then, I will talk through each card - it’s traditional meanings, the elements and energies associated with them, and how I believe it fits into its position in your spread. You can always ask questions about the cards and their meanings, and I always want to know your reaction to your spread. I love hearing what resonates with you, what surprises you, what feels spot-on, and what feelings or questions the reading brought up for you. I always allow the querent to take notes and photos of their spread so they can remember what the cards had to say for them!

Sometimes, a reading can bring up unexpected (or expected) emotions, and I always allow space for those feelings in a reading. Tarot is a beautiful way to connect with the greater energies of the world around us, and that can often be an emotional experience! I do not give advice as a reader, and it’s important to note that I am not a mental health professional. If someone is clearly in crisis or in need of mental health support, I will not move forward with a reading. It’s important to me that those for whom I read are curious, comfortable, and in a healthy state of mind for the reading.

My style of tarot reading is meant to be one that many people with varying levels of experience or knowledge of the cards can interact with. My hope in reading for others is that we can spend a few moments in authentic communication with one another, the cards, and the universe around us. The cards are one of my favorite tools for exploring my inner self, as well as my broader world, and I hope those who come to me for a reading can experience a little bit of that exploration for themselves.
