The Hierophant & The Page of Pentacles

When I drew these cards today, it felt like a feeling simmering below the surface for me finally reached a boiling point. Sometimes, that’s what the cards do - help to surface something that is already there, in the back of our minds, waiting for us to recognize and act on it. I’ve been a little discontented of late, and I am ready to put in the work to get myself and my life back in alignment with what really matters to me.

The Hierophant is an interesting card - for me, it’s all about values. The Hierophant is a teacher, someone or something that guides pupils to recognize what they value and how to cultivate those principles in real life. What do you value? What ideas are most important to you? Are the choices you make daily reflections of those values? Do they help you inch closer to fulfilling them? If it’s hard to answer questions about what your values are, the Hierophant is a nudge to investigate that a little more. Meditate, journal, talk with those closest to you and start the journey toward recognizing those foundational beliefs. Once you know what those values are, only then can you begin to live them day to day.

The Page of Pentacles pairs nicely with The Hierophant, especially for those of us trying to move through a capitalist society in anti-capitalist ways. It’s so easy to mistake who you are with what you have. Hardly ever do you need to buy or acquire something in order to live your core values. Our possessions can be outward signs of our values to others, but they (like tarot cards themselves) are merely representations of ideas, not the ideas themselves. The Page of Pentacles reminds us that it’s okay to want things, and it’s okay to have things, but we cannot let money and objects substitute true happiness and fulfillment. As you examine your values, examine whether you are spending money on things that represent them, or in ways that act upon them. This is a practice that takes years to learn, and changes as values change (yes, your values can change!).

Learn your values, and create a life that helps you live those values to their fullest potential.
